Local Trails

A quick overview of a mix of off road and road rides in the region.

Please ensure that both you and your bike are in good working order and always wear a helmet. Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to get back. Take responsibility for your own actions and ride within your abilities. Leave no trace.

Singletrack

Derroura

16 km Coillte trail designed by Dafydd Davis.  7 km west of Oughterard on the N59 to Clifden.  The entrance is directly opposite the lay-by at Lough Bofin.  Beautiful scenery and lots of midges in summer so bring your skin-so-soft. Download a map here.  If you want a shorter/easier loop you can continue up the fireroad and join the last sections of the singletrack.

Locals Trails

Rosscahill Woods

Hand built cross country style narrow singletrack through the trees.  Lots of interconnected short loops.  Roots and rocks.  Can get very greasy after rain.  Heading west to Clifden from Galway turn right in Rosscahill (signposted for Brigit’s Garden), forest is on your right after about 1 km.  Do not block the local road – there is additional parking at the church on the left hand side just beyond the forest.  Call into MBW for trail conditions and a map.

Moycullen Woods

Short XC loop right in the village – the MBW Lunch Loop.  Park up behind the retirement home (turn right at traffic lights if coming from Galway and it’s on your left).  Follow the MTB signs – kind of a clockwise loop.  The MBW lads will point you in the right direction & show you the shortcut from the shop.

Clarenbridge

Hand built cross country extended to around about 10km now thanks to Sean, Paul, and a few others.  Mostly  singletrack.  Access on the RHS just before the grotto at the Brothers of Charity in Clarenbridge.  Cut yer bars – its narrow!

Kylebrack, Loughrea

More hand built cross country trails – this time with hills.  William O’Connor’s local trail and he’s adding to it all the time.  Check out his blog here for directions for the Kylebrack trails.

Other Trails: Check out William O’Connor’s blog http://mtbtrailsireland.blogspot.com/ for some more ideas.

Off Road Rides

Rosscahill Woods Fire Road – flat fireroad loop – mostly an out-and-back but with a loop at the outermost section.

New Village Loop – can be ridden in either direction – steep climbs followed by gravelly descents – lovely views.  map here

Oughterard – Doon – Seanafestin-Oughterard – a long loop on a mix of quiet roads and fire road – use the back roads to stay off the N59.  A real network of fire roads.  Link to map here
